The Enduring Role of Mothers: A Reflection of Faith and Love
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, it’s a natural time to pause and reflect on the role of mothers—past and present—and the ways in which they reflect God’s enduring love and faithfulness. From the earliest pages of Scripture to the everyday moments in our own lives, mothers have shaped the world through strength, wisdom, and compassion.
One of the most touching reminders of this came to me on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon. I was visiting a friend who had recently become a foster parent. As I watched her gently guide her foster daughter through her math homework—patience in her voice, joy in her eyes—I was struck by how love doesn’t wait for titles or biology. It simply shows up. Again and again. That afternoon reminded me of the many forms “motherhood” takes, and how each one bears witness to the heart of God.
In the Bible, we see mothers who shape the story of salvation with courage and faith. Sarah, who laughed with disbelief and then rejoiced with a miracle. Hannah, who prayed through her tears and offered her child back to God. Mary, who said yes to the unknown, carried hope in her womb, and stood faithfully at the foot of the cross. Each of these women lived lives that were far from perfect, yet their stories are honored in Scripture because of their trust in God and their love for their children.
Today, that same spirit is alive in the mothers among us—those raising young children, those grieving losses, those navigating complicated relationships, and those offering love in ways that may never make the headlines but transform lives every day.
We also give thanks for all who embody the nurturing, guiding, and fiercely protective spirit of a mother. Grandmothers, aunts, mentors, teachers, godparents, foster parents, friends—your presence matters. You are often the ones who hold families together, who say the right thing at the right time, and who pray quietly in the background when no one else sees.
We honor you. We remember with gratitude those who have gone before us. And we hold space for those for whom this day brings more pain than joy, trusting that God meets each of us exactly where we are.
To every mother and mother figure: thank you. Your faithfulness is a gift to the world and a reflection of the love that never fails.
