We have a new purpose statement: Together Making Christ Known
A few years ago, I met a woman named Carol after a Sunday service. She had just moved to the area and was visiting our church for the first time. She smiled warmly as we chatted and said something I’ll never forget: “I’ve been to many churches, but what I’m looking for now is a place where I can really plant roots. I want to commit.”
It struck me then just how rare — and how beautiful — a statement like that can be. In a world that encourages convenience, flexibility, and moving on when things get tough, commitment can feel like an old-fashioned idea. But in the life of the Church, it’s absolutely essential.
Why Commitment Matters
The Gospel message — God’s boundless love, grace, and redemption — is life-changing. And yet, it doesn’t spread on its own. It moves through people: people who show up, who serve, who give, who pray, and who walk with others through life’s ups and downs. That kind of movement requires commitment.
When we commit to a church community, we’re not just signing up for Sunday worship. We’re stepping into a shared mission. We become part of something bigger than ourselves — a movement to bring hope, healing, and purpose to our neighborhood and beyond.
Commitment Isn’t About Perfection
Let’s be clear: commitment doesn’t mean having it all together. It doesn’t mean volunteering for every event or giving beyond your means. Commitment is about consistency. It’s about saying, “I’m in this. I’ll be here. I’ll pray, I’ll support, and I’ll walk alongside others — even when it’s inconvenient or messy.”
Carol ended up becoming a vital part of our church family. She joined a Bible study, helped with our outreach ministry, and became a mentor to younger women in the congregation. Her commitment made a real difference — not just to programs, but to people. That’s the kind of impact we can all have.
A Call to Commit
If you’ve been attending for a while but haven’t yet taken the step into deeper involvement, I want to encourage you: your commitment matters. Whether it’s joining a small group, serving on a team, or simply showing up regularly and bringing your full self, every act of faithfulness helps advance the Gospel.
We are the Church — together. And together, through our commitment, we can be a light in this world, pointing to the love of Christ in all we do.
Let’s plant roots. Let’s commit. And let’s carry the Gospel forward, side by side. Together, we’re making Christ known!
